Fork in the Road: Nauling BBQ and Soul Food Bring Home Cooking to Topeka

TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) — Rodrik and Kim Nawling opened their grill restaurant in Junction City in 2018 before moving to Topeka in late 2021.
“This is what I have been cooking since I was 9 or 10 years old. These are the dishes that I learned to cook on Sundays. On the way home from church, my mom would say, “OK, what do we have? If I had said the name of the dish, she would have said, “Okay, let’s go to the store, buy something, and this is what you cook.”
Kim also contributed to helping the restaurant and she was instrumental in getting it started while working on other things.
“I had my own business. I knew he had a great product and he had a great product and I convinced him to turn it into a business,” King said.
”The brisket is the main thing. I sell the brisket and ribs every day. We catch catfish every day now, we used to fish only on Fridays, and now we fish every day,” Roderick said.
”Topeka hit us. I think we sold out by 1:00 in the first month or so,” Roderick said.
The success and popularity of the restaurant prompted the Knowlings to think about their plans for the future.
“We have several cases and we plan to expand. We look at another building and save it. We love this place,” King said.
