Kenya buys telescopic cranes to rescue SGR trains

Kenya Railways has purchased a telescopic crane that will be used to recover stuck or derailed vehicles on the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway.
The crane, which arrived at the Port of Mombasa on November 1, is one of two waste treatment cranes that will be supplied by engineering, procurement and construction contractor China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) as part of an agreement with Kenya.
The crane is equipped with a diesel-hydraulic engine, has a maximum lifting capacity of 160 tons, and an estimated service life of 70 years.
The crane can also be used for lifting equipment or loading on fields or sidings, and could potentially be used to lift track slabs and sleepers during track maintenance.
To prevent accidental movement during operation, the crane is equipped with a hydraulic braking system and uses outriggers to improve stability.
The crane is towed by a tractor locomotive and can travel at speeds of up to 120 km/h, making it easy to move it to the desired location.
Patrick Tuita received his degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nairobi. With over 10 years of experience in the construction equipment industry, he brings a wealth of experience to our operations.
